Objectives:
Terminal Learning Objectives
- At the conclusion of this presentation, the student shall demonstrate an understanding of the history of the labor movement as it relates to the Illinois Fire Service.
Enabling Learning Objectives
- Explain the need for labor history education to Fire Academy candidates.
- Discuss significant labor-related events in Illinois history.
- Describe working conditions for Illinois Firefighters prior to union establishment.
- List the events that led up to the creation of the IAFF.
- List the events that led up to the creation of the AFFI and its early activities.
- Define collective bargaining and its relevance to unions.
- Discuss the most significant events of the Strike Era (1973-1980).
- Review the timeline of collective bargaining legislation for public safety workers in Illinois.
- Discuss the benefits and rights that Illinois Firefighters have achieved because of collective bargaining.
- Discuss previous and future battles of public safety unions since achieving collective bargaining legislation.
- Discuss the importance of union involvement.
